I get asked how to make bunting all the time, so I have put together a little tutorial for you to download as a PDF.
This is such an easy crafting project, and it never seems to go out of fashion. I have sold heaps of fabric for bunting over the years and it’s always for a different reason. There seemed to be a fashion for hessian bunting at weddings for a while, then it felt like everyone was making bedroom bunting for new babies. Then there is the garden bunting, the workroom bunting, the birthday bunting, the bunting with names on, the bunting for a village fete… the list is endless.
Bunting is a really easy thing to make and this version is super duper easy. Usually you would ‘bag out’ the little flags, which means turning them inside out so the seams don’t show. For this variation I have just sewn them with the seams showing and tidied the edges with pinking shears. If you don’t know what pinking shears are, they are just scissors with zig zag edges. This means they give the magical effect of stopping the fabric fraying, and I think it gives the bunting a rustic, shabby chic type of look. If you don’t own a pair of pinking shears, just sew the edges using a zig zag stitch on your sewing machine, and cut the edges nice and straight with your usual scissors.
This is also a great way to use up scraps of fabric. I am terrible for keeping left over bits of material (I can’t bear waste!), so if you are like me and have a cupboard full of odds and ends, this is the perfect project to use them up. It’s quick too… this project was completed in one afternoon.
