Running Kettering Sewing Studio has been a challenging but incredibly rewarding journey. The shop began life in a small unit on the outskirts of Kettering when my children were still very young, and I remember feeling more than a little nervous about whether I could make a business work while raising a family. Like many mums starting out, I simply wanted to build a good life and give my children the best opportunities I could, and that hope was what gave me the courage to begin.

My Children: The Proudest Achievement of My Life

While my business has played an important role in my life, my greatest pride will always be my children. When they were growing up, our house was always full of music. My daughter Maddie has loved singing and performing for as long as I can remember, and she was always very clear that she wanted to become a singer. Her dedication led her to study at the Royal College of Music in London, and today she is a professional opera singer. Seeing her on stage doing what she loves fills me with enormous pride.

My son Theo is also a talented singer, but his interests have led him towards more athletic ambitions. He now works as a personal trainer at a gym here in Kettering, helping people become healthier and more confident. He truly cares about the people he works with, and it’s wonderful to see him building a career that makes such a positive difference in their lives.

Why My Business Has Meant So Much to Our Family

Running Kettering Sewing Studio has meant far more to our family than simply earning a living. It has helped provide stability over the years and allowed me to support my children as they grew up and followed their own paths. Like many small businesses, it has taken a lot of hard work, long days and plenty of determination, but it has also been incredibly rewarding.

The income from the business has gone straight into the things that really matter. Creating a warm, secure home where my children always felt loved and supported. I wanted our home to be a place where they could truly be themselves and feel confident enough to pursue the lives that would make them happy. In many ways, I think running the shop and doing something I genuinely love — sewing — has helped show them an important lesson: if you can find something you love doing and turn it into a career, you’re already on a very good path in life.

The Community That Helped My Business Grow

One of the most rewarding parts of running Kettering Sewing Studio has been the incredible support from our local community. From the very beginning, loyal customers and neighbours have welcomed us, encouraged us, and kept the shop thriving. Every purchase, every friendly chat, and every recommendation has made a real difference — not just to the business, but to our family too. It’s a wonderful reminder that small businesses succeed not just through hard work, but through the kindness and loyalty of the people around them. I am deeply grateful for every single person who has walked through our doors and chosen to support a local dream.

Women in Business: Reflections After International Women’s Day

Every year, International Women’s Day is a reminder of the incredible resilience, creativity, and determination that women bring to everything they do — and running a business is no exception. As a woman business owner, I’ve faced my fair share of challenges, from balancing family life to managing the day-to-day pressures of keeping a small shop running. But I’ve also discovered that these very challenges have shaped me into a resourceful, adaptable, and determined entrepreneur.

Women often excel in business because we are used to multitasking, problem-solving, and finding solutions that work for everyone involved — whether it’s our family, our team, or our customers. Running a small business has taught me that perseverance, empathy, and passion are just as important as any business plan — and I think these are qualities women bring to the table in abundance.

Bringing It All Together

Motherhood has been the greatest gift of my life — full of joy, pride, laughter, and lessons I never expected to learn — and building a small business alongside it has been its own adventure, demanding and tiring at times, but deeply fulfilling.

My children may be grown now, but a mother’s heart never stops stretching towards them, never stops hoping, never stops wanting to make life a little easier where it can. This business has allowed me to do that, to support them in ways big and small, and that has meant everything.
